| Dino tent- the best hiking equipment I have seen so far :) |
However, there has been one night that was by far the best so far: our stay at Spence Field Shelter in the Smoky Mountains. This was the first night I met people who I actually enjoyed socializing with. I was the first person to get to the shelter, and soon after a young couple from the Czech Republic arrived, and then a single male hiker out for a test run of the backpacking life, next an older couple celebrating their anniversary, and finally a trio of men from the Chicago area. Although everyone came from completely different walks of life, we had an absolutely amazing time enjoying the woods together.
What I absolutely love about the trail, is that despite the fact that everyone is hiking for different reasons, there is a very strong feeling of camaraderie between all hikers. At Spence Field we were able to build a campfire, roast marshmallows, and stay up long enough to see the stars come out. It was like being in a backpackers dream. Everything fell perfectly into place and everyone had a great time.
And even though everything was perfect, the next morning we all packed up our things and went off in different directions. I love the feeling of impermanence on the Appalachian Trail, because it really enforces the importance of living in the moment. No matter what is going on, it is important to be happy with where you are and who you are with, because most likely you will never see them again. The trail teaches you to love life, and to simply live.
