Although many thru-hikers resupply at grocery
stores and gas stations along the way, I was committed to living a healthy and
nutritious lifestyle fueled by organic, non-gmo, and vegetarian foods while I am hiking. These types of foods can
be difficult, and expensive, to come by along the trail, so I reached out to several companies asking for their help. The generosity of these companies is phenomenal, so I wanted to thank each one for their support.
Bob's Red Mill makes a wide variety of organic whole grain products that are perfect for cooking dinners on the trail. The company is committed to using traditional techniques, such as using a real stone mill, to prepare their products. In addition to whole grain products, they also offer a variety of dried fruits and cooking aids, such as milk powder, great for making trail meals more nutritious and tasty.
Foods Alive is a family owned and operated business that focuses on producing healthy products and helping protect the planet rather than focusing on profits. This company genuinely cares about making the world a better place. They produce all sorts of flax crackers that are packed with vitamins, minerals and living enzymes. Their selection of raw and super foods is also pretty outstanding.
Our Daily Eats delivers an exceptional collection of flavored nuts and granolas. The recipes combine unique flavor profiles to create products that are both tasty and nutritious. Having Our Daily Foods on the trail really helps liven up your snacks and kick up the flavors of ordinary meals.
Tru-Nut makes 3 different flavors of powdered peanut butter. Unlike regular peanut butter, these products are lightweight and easy to pack up for the trail (no sticky mess to deal with). It can be mixed with water to make traditional peanut butter, or stirred into oatmeal for added flavor.
Even though many dogs are active by nature, it takes a lot of extra calories and nutrients to power an Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Zuke's Power Bones are all-natural dog treats that are a great supplement for active dogs. They contain fast-burning carbohydrates, slow-buring coconut oil, nutrient-rich antioxidants and wholefood ingredients. Roxy loves eating these little energy bites while we are hiking in the mountains.
Started in 1988, Merrick began as a small family run operation dedicated to making the BEST dog treats and foods ever. A few decades later, I would say that mission has been accomplished. Merrick recently launched a line of Backcountry dog foods containing high-protein kibble and chunks of raw, freeze-dried meats. The first ingredient is always meat, the foods are grain free, and made in the USA so you don't need to worry about any mystery meat from China. I love everything about this company. It is a little pricey, but well worth the money. With as much trouble as I have keeping weight on Roxy, I feel good feeding her Merrick products.
